Popularly known as shrooms, psychedelic mushrooms are gaining popularity across the world. Even the United States FDA granted them therapy designation in August 2017 to be studied as a possible treatment for depression.
Psilocybin, the main ingredient in magic mushrooms, is a potent compound. And for starters, you may be worried about how long you are going to be away from your body. What if it lasts long enough and you get homesick?
Psychedelic mushrooms can be dried or taken fresh on their own. You can also steep them over tea, water, or your favorite drink.
Here is what this piece is all about. We go on a journey of discovering how long the compound lasts in your body before you can come back to yourself. Most importantly, we also dive into drug tests for the compound and its metabolites.
How Long does it take to Feel the Effects?
On average, the effects of taking magic mushrooms manifest in 30 minutes from the time of use. But then there are a number of factors that may affect this timeline. Let us have a look at some of the most common ones.
- The type of shroom and amount of psilocybin. They come in different species, which means different potencies. A similar amount of one shroom may give more psilocybin than another species. Also, the more psilocybin you take, the faster the effects will kick in.
- How you consume your mushrooms. Do you love them fresh or dried? It is known that fresh shrooms are less potent than dry ones. Did you know that taking your magic mushrooms over tea manifests the effects faster?
- Tolerance. Well, the more you get used to magic mushrooms, you may develop some tolerance to the psilocybin compound. This means that your usual dose takes longer for you to feel its impact.
- Mixing with other substances. We have already stated that steeping your shrooms over tea increases their potency. If you have taken other forms of drugs, the effects may take a shorter or longer period before you can feel them, thanks to interactions.
Beware, a trip paid for by psilocybin, can be a good or a bad one. And that adds even more urgency to answering the question of how long the trip is going to last.
How Long do Shrooms Stay in Your System?
According to a research article published in 2017 on the psilocybin clinical potential, the average range of time taken before the effects start to tail off is 3-6 hours. Let us put some science into this.
You see, when you ingest magic mushrooms, the gastrointestinal tract absorbs psilocybin and converts it into psilocin. This happens 10-30 minutes after you munched your shroom. It is difficult to find any traces of psilocybin in plasma and urine.
In an open-label 2017 study dubbed, Pharmacokinetics of Escalating Doses of Oral Psilocybin in Healthy Adults, “ the elimination half-life of psilocin is 3 hours with a standard deviation of 1.1 hours. This is the time taken for the concentration of the compound to go down by half. So you may start experiencing a tail off once this happens. By 6 hours, the strength of the effects is winding off.
Note that some light effects may still linger long after the 6 hours. Typically, 24 hours is a better timeline for you to get back into your full senses after ingesting psychedelic shrooms. But what if you had a bad trip?
Bad trips are mainly due to overdose. This can result from low tolerance like your premier days into using shrooms, taking more than you can afford, or mixing with other substances. Unfortunately, these are harder to shake off. A more severe hangover may be experienced even after the psilocin is broken down. You may ask why this happens. Well, it takes up to 15 hours before all the psilocybin is converted to psilocin.
Getting Psilocybin Out of Your System Faster.
So you landed this job interview, and out of the blue, you are required to take a drug screening with psilocin or psilocybin on the panel. You may wonder how to get these out of your body as fast as possible.
Unfortunately, you cannot do much to clear the psilocybin or psilocin from your system faster. Drinking lots of water may lower the effects, but then it may not be the passcode for your upcoming drug test.
Drug Tests for Magic Mushroom Consumption
Rapid degradation of the active compounds of magic mushrooms in your body is something to note for shroom aficionados. Only traces of psilocybin can be traced in urine tests after 24 hours. Regular use of shrooms may, however, improve these levels significantly.
For a hair test, the use of psychedelic mushrooms can be detected even after 90 days. One setback for anyone undergoing such screening is that a substantial amount of hair may be needed to perform it successfully.
Blood tests are the rarest drug screens. And even so, they are the least likely to fail you as psilocin breaks down and clears from blood plasma very fast.
If you undergo screening regularly, hitting the breaks on your shrooms will be the surer option. However, the regular drug screenings done by many companies rarely detect psilocybin or its metabolites such as psilocin. Many screenings are 5-10 panels, which are free from shrooms.
What about special tests tailor-made for psychedelic mushroom compounds? Yes, they do exist. However, these are far much too expensive to be carried out on a regular or random basis. Unless there is a significant reason why one should undergo such tests, there is no concrete reason to look over your shoulder. Furthermore, the rapid breakdown of the mushrooms may clear any traces before you take the tests.
